Together to Support Beef Industry
Regina, Saskatchewan, August 29, 2003 - IPSCO employees, in a grassroots show of support for the Western Canadian beef industry, today announced they have collectively purchased over $157,000 worth of beef. Since early this week, employees in Regina, Saskatchewan, and in Calgary and Red Deer, Alberta have been filling in orders for specially-priced beef packs, which were made available to them through a company payroll deduction program. As a company that deals with and understands cross border issues and its affect on business, IPSCO provided the "Buy Beef" program as a means of helping an industry facing similar barriers.
"We couldn't be more pleased with the effort put forward by our employees," commented David Sutherland, IPSCO's President and CEO upon hearing of the news. "Notwithstanding how attractive beef prices are right now, I think this "Buy Beef" program by our employees shows how a group of dedicated individuals can rally together and make a difference," he said.
Sutherland called on other companies to follow suit and make similar efforts to encourage support for the ailing cattle industry. While the U.S. border has begun issuing permits for Canadian beef, IPSCO recognizes it may take several weeks to resume shipping at a level that will help cattle producers. Sutherland says the news would have had more impact if the restrictions had been lifted completely. In the interim, he says any effort to help Western Canadian stock growers will help.
IPSCO also collected $1,500 for local 4H groups through a beef on a bun fundraiser held Tuesday at all its Western Canadian facilities.
IPSCO is a North American steel producer incorporated in 1956. Growing from a small pipemaker in Regina, Saskatchewan, the company now has facilities in both Canada and the United States and offers a wide range of high strength steel and pipe products.
