IPSCO Establishes Unity Essay Contest
Contest to Commemorate Former Directors
Regina, Saskatchewan, August 10, 2000 -- IPSCO Inc. (NYSE: IPS) announced today that it has established an essay contest for high school students in memory of the late Dr. E.W. Barootes and the late Mr. W.M. Elliott.
"IPSCO is much indebted to both Dr. Barootes and Mr. Elliott for their service as Board members, and as advisors to and friends of IPSCO," said Roger Phillips, President and Chief Executive Officer of IPSCO.
In his early career Mr. Elliott served as a lawyer to IPSCO working on the original incorporating documents for Prairie Pipe Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a precursor corporation to IPSCO. He subsequently became a director of IPSCO in 1966 and Board Chairman in 1986. "His wise counsel as a lawyer, a Board member, and as Chairman of the Board served IPSCO well throughout his long and close association with the Company," Phillips stated.
Dr. Barootes joined the IPSCO Board in 1982 and served until 1989. "He provided thoughtful and inciteful advice to the Company during a time where the economy was less than robust," said Phillips.
"Even after both men retired upon reaching the mandatory Board retirement age they continued to make themselves available to the Company for their valuable advice," Phillips added.
Both individuals were keenly interested in public policy and active in political parties but neither put partisanship ahead of a goal of having a strong united country. To memorialize these sentiments IPSCO has established an annual essay contest which will be named the Elliott and Barootes Unity Essay Contest. The contest will be open to Grade 10 students across Saskatchewan. The theme of the essays will be the importance of national unity within Canada. In order to encourage students to complete high school and to go on to receive a secondary education the contest will annually offer five awards of $2,000 each to be applied to university or college tuition.
Further details of the contest will be available at the IPSCO website.
